Unscrambling the Eggs

October 2nd, 2006 by deathseeker
Last week’s protest action against the continuing political killings in the country shows precisely the rage we feel against the Armed Forces of the Philippines and its chief-of-staff, Gen. Hermogenes Esperon.
The AFP continues to be a surrogate army of the Pentagon and the White House. It serves its purpose of crushing opposition to U.S. Imperialism’s dominance and control of the country’s economy, politics, culture, and foreign relations. Even after the dismantling of U.S. bases in 1991, lopsided military agreements with the U.S. – such as the Visiting Forces Agreement and the Balikatan exercises – continue to be signed and implemented.
The military has also been the implicated in the rigging of the 2004 presidential polls. In the infamous “Hello Garci” recordings, we heard President Gloria Arroyo and former COMELEC commissioner Garcellano mention names of military generals, including Esperon, in their plot to cheat the national elections.
This however, does not surprise us. After all, what do we expect from the repressive state apparatus of a state that serves only the interests of landlords, and U.S. Imperialism but a military establishment that is both corrupt and rotten to the core.
The constant news of coup attempts reveals the disarray and widespread demoralization in the military’s own ranks. The 2003 Oakwood mutiny brought in the open the junior officers’ feeling of disgust to the institution that is the AFP.
However, the icing on the bitter cake is the AFP’s role in the upsurge of killings and abductions of activists and ordinary civilians. This is under the government program of Oplan Bantay Laya—Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’ s all-out-war supposedly against the CPP-NPA-NDF but is actually being waged against the people.
Progressive organizations whose only interest is to advance the rights that the people have been denied of are seen as communist fronts. Thru the eyes of the military, there is no distinction between an armed guerilla and activists whose only weapons are word, and in this case, eggs.
Justice has not yet been served for the thousands who are victims of human rights violations. Of these, there have been more than 750 lives taken by the AFP’s death squads including LFS student leaders Cris Hugo of Bicol University and Rei Mon Guran of Aquinas University. The military is yet to resurface and release our fellow UP Students Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan who remain among the missing to this very day. The government is yet to prosecute the butcher, Jovito Palparan who continues to walk a free man.
In the forum where Gen. Esperon was invited as a speaker, the lack of a representative from the movement he attacked made it a venue where the military could spread government propaganda. It is reminiscent of the “seminars” being conducted by the military in the countryside where the people are harassed and threatened.
In that same forum, he claimed that they were fighting for democracy. And yet we ask, what democracy are they fighting for but a democracy enjoyed only by the few? It is a democracy where votes are being stolen using the military that has sworn to protect the people and the constitution.
And for so long, we have tried to express our grievances in the most peaceful means possible only for our calls to fall on deaf ears. Our actions are answered by batons and shields or water from a fire truck.
Eggs were thrown at the chief of a military that is stained with the blood of the people for the benefit of the few and the powerful; a military that continues a policy of state repression and fascism.
Indeed, “we share the same goals of social justice, equity, and development”. And so it would be detrimental to our cause if it is our own ranks that are divided. It is in this light that there is an urgent need for us to raise the level of our militancy and intensify our struggle thru collective action.
In the spirit of the Diliman Commune and other mobilizations of the University that shook the U.S.-Marcos dictatorship, MAKIBAKA! HUWAG MATAKOT!
Stop the Killings!
Justice for the victims of human rights violations!
Freedom for Karen Empeño and Sherlyn Cadapan!
Stop the militarization in the countryside!
End Arroyo’s Tyranny, Now!!!

Unsuspected

You came when everything was wild

uncertainty was the way of life

with my hands i held You

taking care not to break your fragile body

You were so small, Your face the size of my fist

thin hair and wrinkled light yellow skin

as You were sleeping i circled my arms around You

hoping to act like a shield from the harsh reality

the world being unkind

each morning i would let You bask in the sun

strengthen You -following what the doctor ordered

each night i would rock You to sleep

while singing a song far from a lullaby

but now You’re growing up faster than imaginable

and it pains me to admit of not being there

i miss You

Behind the counter

June 24th, 2006 by deathseeker

The clock started ticking at 2pm

All geared up, a blue polo shirt and a cap and a name tag, with a fixed smile to boot

the Hi and Hello, passed as swiftly as they came

gotta keep busy no time to chat

Amidst the burgers and fries, whether straight or curly

time is of the essence

three hours- 10 minute break

A relief from the hellish frenzy of the hungry

two hours- 30 minute break

Dinner time

Then….

The white man with a mustash came in

Ordered sweetly, offering a smile to the battered spirit

Receiving the change of papers and coins

hiding a couple bills he asked for more

holding a piece of parchment, the proof of payment

Transforming, the man was really a tiger, looking for the weakest among the herd

With one satisfied grin, the tiger talked with the manager

The smell of fear gave it strength and amusement

Tears threatened to fall

"Sorry sir, it won’t happen again"

A refuge within co-workers was sought

Their skin were all colored but their hearts were clear

Sympathy… that’s all they can offer and a promise it’ll be better tomorrow

Out after 9pm… time slowed, and the bus along with it

The bed was a welcome sanctuary, along with schoolwork scattered under the bedsheet

And so the clock started ticking at 2pm…

haay

June 12th, 2006 by deathseeker

i’ve planned to write more often, but that promise never seem to materialize. it’s just that when i thought i’d be having "free time" then something would come up and the next thing i’ll know the "free time" has gone by…

time is an interesting entity… not bounded by anything or anyone.

Alive…

Para kay Ka Fort

Isang Malaking Kumpanya ng Kape, Gatas At Tsokolate,

Walang Pangalan

Ni Michael Francis C. Andrada

Posted by Bulatlat

I.

Nestle?

Anong malaking kumpanya ang walang ipinamumutawing

pangalan?

II.

Minsan, may nagsabing hindi naman masama ang

kapitalismo. Na ang kasalanan ng mga kapitalista ay

maikakategorisa bilang "corporate irresponsibility."

UPD USC Statement on State Repression

September 26th, 2005 by deathseeker

Makibaka! Huwag Matakot!

Thirty three years after the declaration of Martial
Law, Mrs. Arroyo recently issued the use of
"calibrated preemptive response" versus the people’s
right to peacefully assemble. And recently, reports
reveal the DOJ’s efforts of drafting a proclamation of
martial rule in whatever form it may be packaged.

Startling, yet expected.

At last, Mrs. Arroyo has now bared herself to be the
fascist tyrant that the Filipino people has vowed
never to have again. Repression is the name of her
game for the longest time, and now she is declaring it
up front. Concealed from the general public’s view,
more than 4,000 human rights violations have already
been committed under the Arroyo regime’s four years in
office. Abductions, intimidations, summary executions
and warrantless arrests have been her retort to those
brave enough to speak and act against her
adminstration and its policies.

Arroyo’s "calibrated preemptive reponse",
characteristic of an authoritarian rule, is a
desperate attempt to dissuade the public, particularly
the middle forces, the youth and students, from
joining mass actions. Concurrently, the DepEd issued
DO no.57 ordering students and teachers to "stay away
from partisan political activities."  The numerous
state apparatus—from the government agencies to the
military—are now on the double to repress our civil
liberties.

Never shall we default in our historic responsibility
to struggle and protect our democratic rights.

We have more than enough reasons to remove Gloria
Arroyo from office. Crimes of stealing the people’s
vote, plunder of public funds for personal political
interest, and murder of political dissenters must not
be left to pass without justice. Add to that the
recent expose of contracts between the Arroyo
administration and American lobbying firms on key
Philippine policies and programs, going as far as
allowing US to meddle with the proposed Charter
Change. Such deals has indeed exposed Arroyo`s brazen
puppetry to the United States.

Repression is an instinctive state reaction in the
face of heightening dissent. Faced with such rash
strokes, we are tasked to take more militant actions
to declare that we are undaunted.

We will not bow down to the threat of heavy state
repression.. The people united will triumph over the
tyrant Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Oppose state repression!
Down with the fascist Arroyo regime!

Killing spree starts again a day after Martial Law anniversary
KMU National Council Member, Nestle Cabuyao Union President Diosdado
"Ka Fort" Fortuna shot dead

Diosdado "Ka Fort" Fortuna, President of United Filipro Workers Union,
the workers union of Nestle Cabuyao, also the Chairperson of
Pagkakaisa ng mga Manggagawa ng Timog Katagalugan (PAMANTIK-KMU) was
shot dead at around 6 pm tonight in front of Sagara Factory in
Canlubang, Laguna.

Reports said Fortuna left the Nestle picket in Cabuyao, Laguna at
around 5 pm. He was supposed to visit his ailing grandson. He was on
board a motorcycle and on his way home to Barangay Paciano when he was
attacked by still unidentified assailants. He sustained two fatal
caliber .45 gunshot wounds in the chest. He was rushed by bystanders
to the Calamba Doctors Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) condemns in strongest possible
terms the brutal killing of Fortuna. Fortuna, 51 years old, is an
active member of KMU National Council and has served the militant
labor movement for 28 years since 1977 as a labor leader of the
multinational company Nestle workers’ union. He also holds several
positions, including Anakpawis Party List-Southern Tagalog Chairman
and Co-Chairperson of the National Coalition for the Protection of
Workers Rights-Southern Tagalog (NCPWR-ST).

"While we are still looking into the details of Ka Fort’s gruesome
murder, we are certain that the killing is politically motivated.
Given the notorious record of human rights violations and summary
executions of leaders, members and activists of progressive peoples’
organizations in Southern Luzon, we are holding the military, police
and the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo government highly accountable in the
killing," said KMU National Chairperson Elmer Labog.

"As a principled labor leader, Ka Fort manned the Nestle picket lines
since their strike started in January 2002. He consistently advocated
workers’ rights and welfare by actively serving the union and
progressive people’s movement in Southern Tagalog, despite dangerous
conditions and threats on his life. He braved and fought the
government’s militarization campaign and atrocities on the people’s
rights and livelihood. We will seek justice for his death and will
send the evil perpetrators of this murder to hell where they belong."

Fortuna is the third regional mass leader killed after KASAMA-TK
chairperson Eddie Gumanoy and Eden Garcellana of KARAPATAN – Southern
Tagalog were killed in April 2003. ###
